Pediatric Dentistry

We are a family dental practice

So much about being a new parent is overwhelming – but taking care of your child’s teeth doesn’t have to be. We serve patients of all ages and love our young patients. With our focus on patient comfort, we’re well-suited to put children at ease in the dental chair.

How to Support Your Child's Dental Health

You should bring your child in for an exam by their first birthday. This is typically when their teeth are beginning to erupt. We’ll be able to give you guidance as to what to expect from their tooth development, what to watch for, and how to clean their teeth each step of the way.

Dental Milestones

  • First teeth – between 6-12 months – Teeth typically begin erupting after 6 months. You should clean your baby’s gums with a damp cloth after feeding to help remove bacteria. Use a baby toothbrush with a very small smear of toothpaste to clean any teeth. Schedule their first dental appointment by their first birthday.
  • Full set of primary teeth – by age 3 – By the time your child turns 3, they will have all 20 of their baby teeth. Brush your child’s teeth twice a day with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste (once they are able to spit out toothpaste when done brushing). Start flossing when two teeth touch. Encourage your child to take pride and responsibility in performing their own oral hygiene to build lifelong habits.
  • Losing baby teeth – 6-12 years old – Your child will begin losing primary teeth during their 6th year, with their permanent teeth following. Encourage them to gently wiggle any loose tooth but not pull them out too quickly. Ask Dr. Patel about sealants for their back molars to help prevent cavities in hard-to-reach places.
  • Permanent teeth – 12-18 years old – The second set of molars comes in around age 12, with wisdom teeth following around age 17-21. Continue regular checkups to identify a potential need for orthodontic treatment or wisdom tooth removal.

Pediatric Dental Exams

Schedule your entire family’s exams under one roof. Receiving care from the same dental practice not only simplifies your family’s schedule, but makes your children feel more comfortable. We are a family practice and would love nothing more than to welcome you into our community.
